I actually played through the Ruins, Snowdin, and part of Waterfall blind. Furthermore, I didn't realize the full weight of what happened in the situation you described in the comic. My second encounter with Flowey was more or less...

Yeah, I killed Toriel then reloaded my save file to spare her. What are you gonna do about it?
Of course, when I realized the full weight of this statement, I freaked out, thinking that Flowey would "set things right" by killing Toriel himself. Considering Flowey's true identity, I now know that he wouldn't do that.
I even got a great idea for a fanfiction based on accidentally killing Toriel. In this case, Frisk (a boy) can't reload a save file and takes a big pile of Toriel's dust to eat in her butterscotch cinnamon pie. After eating it, he feels sick and goes to sleep. When he wakes up, he looks in a mirror and realizes that he now has the body of Toriel as well as some of her memories. The whole fanfiction would be Frisk living in Toriel's unfamiliar body.
